Underhand
If the ball takes you to your right and your can get in front of it, use an underhand toss. Stay left of the ball on your approach, then the footwork is left, right, field. Cross over with the left foot while making the toss. Keep a stiff wrist on the toss and never let your arm go above your shoulder. Follow the feed to ensure a firm toss with good direction. “Shake hands with the shortstop”.
Backhand
If the ball is hit right at you or if you have to come forward and field it near the base line, use a backhand toss. Stay left of the ball on your approach, then the footwork is left, right, field. Cross over with the left foot while making the toss. For the toss, the thumb goes underneath the ball, the wrist stays stiff, and the fingers finish straight up (say “hi”).
Replace Feet
If the ball is hit to your left and you can get in front of it and can field it inside your body, turn inside towards second base and replace your feet to make the throw.
Glove Side Spin
If you cannot get in front of it and catch the ball outside your body, turn towards the outfield and replace your feet to make the throw. Control your body and plant hard on the right foot.
Backhand Underneath or Glove Flip
If the groundball takes you hard up the middle and your momentum continues to carry you that way, exchange it and feed it directly underneath your glove side arm. Keep the glove side arm up so the shortstop has a clear look at the ball. Tough feed… Most pros just flip it with their glove
