Primary and Secondary Leads
Standard Primary Lead
Always keep your eyes on the pitcher.
Take your lead off the back corner of first base and in line with the back corner of second base.
To get your lead, take a lateral step with your right foot, then shuffle, shuffle, creep.
Be under control and balanced with your shuffle steps.
Take your lead the same way at first and second base, but you can get off further at second base.
One Way Lead
We will use this kind of lead to try and draw a pick off so we can see a left handed pitcher's move.
Get an extended lead anticipating a pick.
With your left foot, take a short jab step back towards the base with your left foot when the pitcher lifts his leg.
Extend your left arm straight out as you jab step.
If he picks, dive back. If he throws home, get a one shuffle secondary lead.
Secondary Lead
When the pitcher reaches the top of his delivery, take two strong balanced shuffles towards second.
Stay square to the plate as you shuffle.
Time your secondary such that your right foot hits the ground just as the ball crosses the plate.
Go HARD and HARD! Get as far off as you possibly can but still get back.
Once the ball is caught by the catcher, hustle back to the bag. Never get back picked!
Secondary from First Base
Secondary from Second Base
Leads at Third Base
Take a walking primary lead just off the foul line and in foul territory.
Get as far off the base as the 3rd baseman while keeping your eyes on the pitcher.
If the 3rd baseman is holding you on, take the same lead you would at 1st base.
Once the pitcher is committed to the plate, take a walking secondary lead (right, left, right) toward home to create some momentum towards the plate.
You can get a couple extras steps on your secondary lead if a right handed batter is up.
If the ball is not put into play, come back in fair territory to block the catcher's throwing lane.
