Fielding Ground Balls
We need to get to the ball quickly and field it cleanly to keep our opponents from getting an extra base and to steal outs when there is a force play in front of us.Â
Approach to the Ball
Take deep angles to all ground balls. Drop step if necessary to cutoff balls in the gap.
Get behind the baseball and field through it coming back to the infield.
If there is no immediate play on a base runner, field the ball like an infielder. At a minimum, use your body to knock the ball down. No extra bases!
If you have a play on a base runner, field the ball on the side.
Fielding Through the Ball
Get behind the ball quickly, then get your feet under control to play through it.
Line up the ball slightly outside your front foot
Keep your head down through the catch.
After the catch, aggressively step through with your right leg.
Bring your glove up and get your front side closed and lined up with your target.
Get on top of the baseball and throw it hard through the relay man.
Reverse Pivot
Used when you are moving hard left but need to throw right.
After fielding the ball, turn your body glove side.
Plant hard on your right foot to get your body lined up to throw.
