Bunt Defense
In all bunt situations, we want to be sure that we get an out. Most of the time, that out will be at 1B. We can go after the lead runner, but only when the ball is bunted hard and we are sure that we can get him out. If a play on the lead runner is going to be close, take the sure out at 1B instead.
P – Field bunts bunted back to you and to the 1B side. If the 3B fields the bunt, cover 3B.
C – Loudly direct play. Field the bunt if possible. If the batter misses, look to back pick the runner at 1B.
1B – Cover 1B. If the ball is bunted to the 1B side and past the pitcher, come up and field the bunt. When in doubt, help the pitcher out.
2B – Move to cover 1B. If 1B is on the bag, move behind him to back up.
SS – Cover 2B. Setup on the front of the base.
3B – Charge when the batter shows bunt and field bunts on the 3B side. If bunt is fielded by another player, retreat and cover 3B.
P – Field bunts bunted back to you and to the 3B side.
C – Loudly direct play. Field the bunt if possible.
1B – Charge when the batter shows bunt and field bunts on the 1B side.
2B – Cover 1B. The first baseman is charging so you must get there.
SS – Hold the runner pre-pitch, then cover 2B.
3B – Cover 3B on balls bunted short to the catcher or straight back to the pitcher. If the ball is bunted firmly to the 3B side, come up and field the bunt. When in doubt, help the pitcher out. Do not leave 3B until you see the ball hit the bat.
Default to running the same defense as if there is a runner on 1B.
If the ball is bunted hard to the pitcher or third baseman, we can make a play on the runner at the plate, but we need to be sure we can get him.
Most of the time we will concede the run and get the out at 1B.
